I finished Roma 5/8/2020. I watched it completely in Spanish as a challenge to myself and I did understand pretty much all of it which was amazing.
At first, I was annoyed by the black and white of the film but realized that this choice displayed the rich landscape that served as the storyline. We followed the life of a young indigenous girl as she watches the family she works for falls apart. With the father leaving the mother to take care of the kids. She becomes pregnant and the father leaves. The family supports her throughout the movie and we see how much she cares for the family. It's a movie that talks about class struggle, revolution, and family. It's also a movie with scenes and shots that all seem to have a deeper meaning. The scene of her drowning to save the children, her cleaning the floor in the beginning, the shot of the Ford inching into the driveway. These meticulously made shots all represent major themes. The real power in this movie is the camerawork as it weaves the story.
